Common Tips and Tricks

Here are some practical tips compiled from both personal experiences and advice from career experts. Use these strategies to refine your resume and increase your chances of landing the right role.

Edit your resume specific to the role you are applying for

It’s no secret that every job has unique requirements. Therefore, submitting the same resume to multiple roles with different requirements won’t get you very far. Customize your resume to highlight the most relevant skills and experiences for each role. Some ways to do this include:

Hack: Work Smarter, Not Harder

One fun trick you can use when trying to figure out how to frame a resume around a role is to throw the job description/responsibilities and your current resume bullet points in ChatGPT. Then, ask the model to integrate key terms from the job description into your resume bullet points. This can give you an idea of where to start when readapting your resume for a role.

That being said, it’s important to note that many times, ChatGPT’s outputs won’t be exactly what you need. Instead, use its outputs as a guide to help you adapt your resume.

Hack: Categorize Your Roles

Writing a resume specific to each role you apply for can be time-intensive and in some ways, draining. Job searching isn’t called a full-time job for no reason! Therefore, when going about your job search, think about how you might categorize roles you find, and whether you can develop one resume for each “category.” This is a strategic way to apply while reducing your own cognitive load.

Make your professional summary clear and concise

In some instances, a professional summary can be helpful to orient recruiters on who you are, what you do, and what you are looking for… Think of it as the first impression, and the remainder of your resume as your deeper story. If you decide to include one in your resume, make it count!
